The contractors of the multi-billion shilling Standard Gauge Railway line gathered to celebrate the achievements since the construction of the railway line began some two years ago. The celebrations were attended by the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Dr. Liu Xianfa and were held at the Syokimau Headquarters on August 24, 2015.

Speaking during the event, the Ambassador noted that when completed, the railway line will help achieve the dream of efficient transport in Kenya. So far, the railway line has offered jobs to 25,000 Kenyans and is playing a key role in the achievement of Kenya’s Vision 2030.

He took the opportunity to appreciate all the people who have played a key role in supporting the project. He singled out  the Presidents of Kenya and China for their leadership, the Police service for offering security, the locals for their cooperation and the contractors for their efficiency to ensure that the project is completed in time and within budget.

Among other things happening alongside the development of the railway line include: cultural integration which is key for sustainable development, said the Ambassador.  He noted that the contractors have also played a key role in corporate social responsibility like drilling of boreholes in the local communities, cash and food donations. The local business community has benefited since the raw materials for the development of the railway line is being sourced locally.

As far as exchange of culture is concerned, four Confucius Institutes have been set up in the country and the students and staff from the Institutes staged several performances exhibiting both Africa and Chinese culture.

Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Boinett underscored the importance of security provided by the National Police Service towards the building of the railway line.

Present during the event was Prof. Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Student Affairs and Mr. Johnson Kinyua, Director Advancement.
